Satsang Music

Music is an important part of Satsangs output, including studio recordings, live performance and multimedia experiments such as DubCasting. Apart from independent albums, we produce high-quality demos, promos, and remixes, music videos, artwork and associated marketing materials, as well as sound design and soundtrack for films, documentaries and animation.

As in all our work, our music aims to cross existing boundaries, and we search for new and innovative explorations of sound. We view music as part of a broader picture -- the cultures it springs from, the people who play it, and the social forces which are constantly affecting all musicians.

Much 'world' music marketing in the West has emphasized the exoticism of musical cultures of Africa, Asia, Latin America etc. but has ignored dimensions such as political engagement and social struggle which are important strands in many musical movements. Music is not only sound, but also a vehicle to express powerful ideas and messages, and a means to inspire people and inform them about the world.

Satsang's musical work keeps sight of this, and engages with social questions as well as entertainment. We put on regular musical events, which often include documentaries, exhibitions and installations to put the music in its context. We also consult to run music and technology workshops for young people, as we understand that a means to express itself is sometimes the most valuable thing for a young mind.

Beyond the Borders is a regular event celebrating the musical cultures of the World, and exploring the fusions between them.

What began as a monthly night at Passing Clouds in Dalston (London) is starting spread in other venues around London and elsewhere.

We promote new and original live music, from ALL over the World. Our nights feature musicians from Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin and North America, usually with artists from more than one continent on the same night.

Our favourite recipe comes from the collaborations and fusions which arise spontaneously at our nights. Our musical shows are experimental but at the same time accessible and danceable, blending rhythm from musical styles, electronica, and acoustic and traditional sounds. Later in the evening, our resident djs take over spinning the best tunes from around the World.

As our name suggests, the mission of Beyond the Borders is to bring people from different musical and cultural backgrounds together though world class live fusion acts. This is the culture of the 21st Century. We celebrate our differences and our unity, creating understanding through music.

DubCasting revolves around the spirit of dub music, blending the conscious sounds of roots dub with the ongoing advancements of future dub influenced sounds.

The impact of dub music and soundsystem culture upon the world of music, especially here in Britain, is profound. Original pioneers coming from the small but powerful island of Jamaica back in the 1960s creatively constructed a mindblowing new sound, using the B side of reggae pressings to present a new mix of the tune, the dub mix, stripped down to the rawest elements, the drum and the bass, awash with all manner of effects and cyclical melodies, subtly circling the bass leading to higher levels of meditation.

The sounds of dub were infectious and far reaching. Dub soon evolved and gained recognition as its own genre and has progressed to influence future styles of music; most notably upon trip hop, jungle, techno and dubstep, and more subtly upon almost all musical forms. Some say this increased popularity has saturated dub music, that future dub has lost it's roots. Roots of creative inspiration, deep meditation, positive vibrations, collective celebration and greater consciousness. Others say the roots are still there, just in a different form. DubCasting aims to celebrate the old styles and embrace the new. Selectors, DJs, producers, musicians, visual artists, singers, soundsystems, dancers, rappers, poets and story tellers all come together, electronic and traditional instruments combine, giving way to a shape shifting innovative show of bass music that investigates the meaning of the word dub.

Bringing roots to the future and a future to the roots.
